Lota is a small city in central Chile where, despite recent tragedy, vibrant colours, resilient people and incredible natural beauty dominate. These photos attempt to capture the little details that demonstrate the spirit of this place and to enable others to discover Lota for themselves.
What is Lota?
Lota is a small city in central Chile that has suffered greatly in recent years. A devastating earthquake in February 2010 destroyed the city’s physical infrastructure and left many residents homeless. But even before this tragedy Lota was already struggling to recover from the economic disaster that took place when the main employer in the region, a coalmine called El Chiflon del Diablo (Breath of the Devil), closed after more than a century of operation. Despite these setbacks, Lota has retained its strength and incredible spirit. Every place has a distinctive identity, a genius loci (spirit of place) that comes from something beyond the physical buildings and infrastructure that make up the space. In Lota, this spirit is expressed through vibrant colours, resilient people and incredible natural beauty. These photos attempt to capture the little details that demonstrate the spirit of this place and to enable others to discover Lota for themselves.
